The Basics

What is AuClose?+

A local auction marketplace. You list an item, your neighbors bid on it, the winner's payment is held in escrow, and you hand the item off in person. No shipping, no haggling, no strangers ghosting you at 8pm. We're launching first in Las Cruces, NM.

When does AuClose launch?+

Early access is opening soon in Las Cruces. Drop your email on the homepage and you'll get exactly one email when we open the doors. No newsletter, no drip campaign.

How much does it cost?+

Listing is free. Buying is free. Sellers pay 10% of the final sale price, deducted at handoff — if your item doesn't sell, you pay nothing. Optional upgrades and the AuClose+ subscription are laid out on the Fee Schedule.

Verification

Why do I have to verify my identity?+

Because anonymous strangers are a Craigslist problem. Before anyone can list or bid, they complete three steps: government ID verification, a valid payment method, and a confirmed residential address. Everyone you transact with has done the same. That's the whole point.

Who sees my ID and selfie?+

Not us. Identity verification is handled entirely by Stripe Identity — AuClose never receives, stores, or processes your ID images or biometric data. We get back a single yes/no verification result. Details in our Privacy Policy.

Who sees my home address?+

Your address is converted to a neighborhood-sized geographic zone used for drive-time discovery — other users only ever see things like "12 min away." Your actual address is disclosed to exactly one person: the winning buyer of your auction, after their payment is authorized — and only if you choose a home pickup instead of a public meetup spot.

Bidding & Auctions

Are bids really binding?+

Yes. A bid on AuClose is a commitment to buy at that price if you win — not an opening move in a negotiation. When you win, your card is authorized for the amount automatically. This is what kills the "is this still available?" spiral. Bid what you're willing to pay.

What auction formats are there?+

AuClose launches with the Standard ascending auction. Four more engines — Silent (sealed bids), The Drop (falling price), FairMatch (second-price), and Blitz (15-minute rush) — are built and staged. Vote on which unlocks first.

Can I set a minimum price?+

Yes — a secret reserve. If bidding doesn't reach your reserve, the item doesn't sell and you owe nothing. Reserves are a paid upgrade (or free with AuClose+); see the Fee Schedule.

Money & Handoffs

How does the escrow hold work?+

When an auction closes, the winner's card is authorized — not charged. The money doesn't move. It moves only when the handoff happens: the buyer inspects the item in person, shares a secure PIN, the seller enters it in the app, and the payment is captured and transferred. No PIN, no charge.

What if the item isn't what was described?+

Don't share the PIN. You inspect the item before the handoff completes — if it's materially different from the listing, walk away and contact us. Once you share the PIN, you're confirming you've inspected and accepted the item, and the sale is final. Full details in the Terms of Service.

What happens if a buyer's payment fails?+

The buyer gets a 24-hour Make It Right window to fix their payment method. If they don't, they take a Karma penalty, and you get options: relist instantly or extend a Second Chance Offer to your next-highest bidder. Nobody just disappears overnight.

How do I get paid?+

The moment the PIN is verified, your proceeds (minus the 10% fee) transfer to your seller account, powered by Stripe. Withdrawals of $25 or more to your bank are free; smaller withdrawals carry a pass-through processing fee (see Fees).

Trust & Safety

What is Karma?+

A 0–100 reputation score computed from what you actually do — completed handoffs, on-time arrivals, prompt payments — not star ratings from strangers. Ghosting a meetup, defaulting on a payment, or trying to renegotiate at handoff all cost you. Consistently low scores get bid-capped or removed.

Is meeting strangers safe?+

Safer than the alternative — everyone on AuClose is ID-verified, has a payment method on file, and has a reputation on the line. That said, use judgment: sellers can designate a public meetup location instead of their home, and we recommend well-lit public spots when it makes sense. Your safety practices are laid out in the Terms.

Account

How do I reset my password?+

Tap "Forgot password?" on the app's sign-in screen. You'll get a single-use reset link by email. Links are time-limited — if yours expired, just request a fresh one.

How do I delete my account or my data?+

Use the account deletion option in the app's settings, or email support@auclose.com. Personal data is deleted or anonymized within 30 days, with narrow legal exceptions (tax records, fraud prevention) described in the Privacy Policy.
